Flushing and refilling a GTI's cooling system is easy to do and just as easy to get wrong. These engines trap air, and an airlock will make a perfectly healthy car run hot or throw a temperature light — so the refill and the bleed matter far more than the drain. I do it cold, take my time on the bleed, and use the correct VW coolant (see GTI Fluids Capacities)
