VW GTI VIN decoder
Reads what a 17-character VW VIN encodes — the model year, the assembly plant, and which Golf/GTI generation (Mk1 to Mk8) it is. Engine, trim and colour aren't fully in the VIN; where to find them is explained below.
Where engine, trim & colour actually live
The VIN reliably gives the year, plant and generation. The exact engine, trim and colour are on the VW data sticker, not decodable from the VIN without VW's tables:
- The data sticker is in the boot — on the spare-wheel-well floor or the boot lid — and duplicated in the service book. It lists every fitted option.
- A 3-digit engine-code letter stamp (for example CCTA, CXCB, BPY, AWP) is on the block/head and on the sticker — that, not the VIN, tells you the exact engine.
- The paint code is on the sticker (for example LP3G / paint code G2 = Tornado Red, LC9A = Deep Black) — match it on a VW paint chart.
- The PR / option codes list the factory-fitted equipment (DSG, sunroof, packages).
