The DSG dual-clutch gearbox is brilliant, but it needs servicing and it's got one expensive failure — the mechatronic unit.
DSG service — I don't skip it:
- The wet-clutch 6-speed DQ250 (common on GTIs) wants a fluid and filter change every ~40k miles / 60k km. Skipping it is the fastest route to trouble.
- The later 7-speed DQ381/DQ500 (Mk7.5/Mk8) is serviced too — "sealed for life" it is not.
The mechatronic:
- The mechatronic (valve body + control unit) can fail — jerky shifts, refusing to engage, limp mode, or a gearbox warning. VCDS codes point to it.
- A failed mechatronic is a big-ticket repair, so on-time fluid changes are cheap insurance.
The clutch packs: the dual clutches wear like any clutch (worse if you launch it or it's chipped hard) — judder or slip means clutch-pack wear.
So service the DSG on time (~40k) and it lasts; neglect it and the mechatronic/clutch bills are steep. For a service you'll want the DSG fluid and filter kit (and pan gasket).
