A P0420 (catalyst efficiency below threshold) is a common older-GTI code — sometimes the cat, sometimes not.
What it means: the ECU compares the upstream and downstream O2 sensors; if the cat isn't cleaning enough, it logs P0420.
Before condemning the cat:
- Rule out a worn downstream O2 sensor, an exhaust leak before the cat (draws in air and skews the reading), and a car that's been running rich (misfires, a bad MAF) — which damages a cat.
- A decat/aftermarket cat on a tuned car triggers P0420 unless spoofed.
The fix: if the cat is genuinely spent (or rattling internally), replace it — OE or a quality aftermarket that meets emissions. Fix the cause (rich running) or the new cat dies too.
