A P0420 (catalyst efficiency below threshold) is a common older-GTI code — sometimes it's the cat, and often it isn't, so I don't just buy one.
What it means: the ECU compares the upstream and downstream O2 sensors; if the cat isn't cleaning enough, it logs P0420
