On a modern VW, VCDS (or OBDeleven) is the diagnostic starting point — a VW-specific tool that reads far more than a generic OBD-II scanner.
What it does that a cheap reader can't:
- Reads every module (engine, DSG, ABS, airbag, comfort) and their manufacturer-specific fault codes, not just generic P-codes.
- Shows live data / measuring blocks — per-cylinder misfire counts, fuel trims, boost, timing pull, DSG temps.
- Does adaptations and coding — throttle body, service reset, feature coding.
Using it for a fault:
- Run a full scan first — note every stored code and its module.
- For a misfire, read the per-cylinder misfire counters to find the offender (see Coil Packs Misfire).
- Clear codes, drive, re-scan to see what returns.
Tools: VCDS (Ross-Tech cable + software) is the reference; OBDeleven (Bluetooth dongle + app) is a cheaper, capable alternative.
