Lowering a GTI transforms it but has to be done right — springs alone ride badly, and alignment is not optional.
Options:
- Lowering springs on stock dampers: cheapest, but the stock shocks aren't valved for the shorter spring and wear fast — a stopgap.
- Coilovers: the proper route. Budget tier (BC, ST) is height-adjustable and fine on the street; mid (KW, Bilstein) rides and lasts better.
- Factory DCC (adaptive dampers) complicates coilover fitment — keep DCC or run a DCC-delete/coding.
Do it right:
- Get a full alignment after (toe first) or it eats tyres — see Rear Axle Beam.
- Extreme drops wreck the geometry (bump steer, bad CV/arm angles) — keep it sensible on a street car.
