A clunk over bumps and vague steering on a GTI is usually the front control-arm bushings and ball joints. The lower arms locate the front wheels; their rubber bushings and integral ball joints wear.
Symptoms:
- A knock or clunk over bumps or when turning.
- Vague or wandering steering, uneven tyre wear.
- Play when you rock the wheel at 6-and-12.
The fix:
- On most GTIs the ball joint is part of the control arm — replace the complete arm (both sides). Quality arms (Lemförder OE, Meyle HD) last; the cheapest ones don't.
- The rear control-arm bush is a common separate wear point — a torn one causes clunk and wheel-hop.
- Align it afterwards.
