On the EA888 the thermostat lives inside the plastic water-pump/thermostat module — it's not a simple in-hose thermostat you can pop out. So renewing it, whether it's stuck-open (runs cold) or stuck closed (overheats), means replacing the module or its thermostat section. It's a known service item and a doable DIY if you take your time
