On the turbo GTIs (1.8T and EA888) the turbo and its wastegate are wear items — and on the EA888 Gen 3 (Mk7), a wastegate-actuator rattle is a known noise.
Wastegate rattle (Mk7 EA888 Gen3):
- A rattle/buzz at light throttle or ~1,500–2,500 rpm as the electronic wastegate actuator and linkage wear. Early on it's mostly cosmetic noise; a revised actuator addresses it.
Turbo failure (1.8T + EA888):
- Shaft play, oil in the intake, blue smoke, a whistle or lost boost mean a failing turbo. On the 1.8T, oil sludge (18t Coil Packs Sludge) is the usual killer — the turbo is oil-fed.
- Always sort the oil feed/return when fitting a turbo, or the new one dies the same way.
