EA888 Oil ConsumptionFree

MrGTI house reference

Some Gen 2 EA888 engines (roughly 2008–2011, Mk6 GTI and the wider 2.0T family) burn oil — sometimes a quart every 600–1,000 miles — from a piston-ring design that doesn't drain oil from the rings well.

Symptoms:

What to do:

Buying tip: on a Gen 2 EA888, ask about oil consumption and check the level — it's a known trait, not always a dealbreaker, but price it in.

Bottom line: rule out the PCV and cooling module first; genuine ring-related consumption is a known Gen 2 trait with a big piston fix. See GTI Service Intervals.
