Some Gen 2 EA888 engines (roughly 2008–2011, Mk6 GTI and the wider 2.0T family) burn oil — sometimes a quart every 600–1,000 miles — from a piston-ring design that doesn't drain oil from the rings well.
Symptoms:
- Oil level dropping with no external leak and little visible smoke.
- Fouled plugs, the odd misfire, and faster carbon build-up.
What to do:
- Rule out the cheap causes first — a failed PCV and a leaking cooling module both raise consumption.
- If it's genuinely the rings, the fix is updated pistons and rings (VW revised the design) — an engine-apart job. Many owners with moderate consumption simply monitor the level and top up.
Buying tip: on a Gen 2 EA888, ask about oil consumption and check the level — it's a known trait, not always a dealbreaker, but price it in.
