Carbon build-up on the intake valves is the price of direct injection. On the FSI and early TSI EA888 (Mk5 2.0 FSI, Mk6 and early Mk7 TSI), fuel is sprayed straight into the cylinder, so it never washes the back of the intake valves — and oil vapour from the crankcase bakes onto them.
Symptoms (usually 60–100k miles):
- Rough or lumpy idle, a stumble, cold-start misfires.
- Loss of low-end power and throttle response.
- Misfire codes (P0300-series) under load.
The fix — walnut blasting:
- Pull the intake manifold and media-blast the valves with crushed walnut shell through a vacuum shroud. It's the only real clean — chemical "intake cleaners" don't touch carbon baked behind a closed valve.
- Treat it as maintenance every ~60–80k miles on a direct-injection GTI, not a one-off repair.
Slow the rate:
- A catch can cuts the oil vapour reaching the valves.
- A healthy PCV matters — a failed one dumps far more oil mist (see EA888 PCV Breather).
Note: engines that add port injection alongside direct (some Mk7.5/Mk8) largely solved this by washing the valves again.
Bottom line: on an FSI/TSI GTI, plan on a walnut blast — normal maintenance, not a defect. See FSI Cam Follower HPFP.
