Walnut-blasting the intake valves is the real fix for carbon build-up on a direct-injection GTI — a weekend DIY with the right kit.
Steps:
- Remove the intake manifold to expose the ports (disconnect harness, coolant and vacuum as needed).
- Rotate the engine so the intake valves are closed on the cylinder you're cleaning (so debris can't drop past).
- Fit the vacuum-shroud adapter over the port, feed crushed walnut media with compressed air, vacuuming as you blast.
- Work through each cylinder, then reassemble with new intake-manifold gaskets and O-rings.
Gotchas: valves closed for the cylinder you're doing; have a shop-vac and the proper shroud; be thorough, then clear codes.
