Checking the cam follower on a Mk5 2.0 FSI (BPY) is a 20-minute job that prevents a cam-and-pump-destroying failure — do it every ~20k.
Steps:
- The follower sits under the HPFP on the head. Depressurise the fuel system, unbolt the HPFP (two bolts) and lift it clear (mind the seals).
- The bucket follower is underneath — lift it out.
- Inspect the face: a smooth shiny pad is fine; a matte patch means watch it; a hole worn through is failure (check the cam lobe too).
- Fit the updated DLC-coated follower (lubed), refit the HPFP with new seals, torque to spec, re-pressurise and check for leaks.
Gotchas: orientation — the follower goes back the right way up; use the updated part.
