The diverter valve (DV) — the turbo's bypass/recirculation valve — is a routine failure on the 1.8T and FSI/early-TSI EA888. It vents boost between shifts; when its diaphragm or piston tears, you lose boost.
Symptoms:
- Down on power / slow to build boost, a flat feel.
- A flutter or stutter under boost, or a soft surge.
- Sometimes an underboost code.
The fix:
- Fit the revised diverter valve — the early plastic-diaphragm DV was superseded by a piston-style ("DV+" / revised) unit; that's the fix, a quick bolt-on on the turbo/intake.
- On the 1.8T, a metal-piston revised OEM or aftermarket DV is the durable answer.
