The high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) on the direct-injection GTIs can fail — separate from the cam follower that drives it on the Mk5.
Symptoms:
- Long crank or no-start, especially when warm; a hard hot-restart.
- Stalling under load, loss of power / limp mode, and low rail-pressure codes (P0087) on VCDS.
Diagnose:
- Read actual vs requested rail pressure — a pump that can't hold the high side is failing.
- On the Mk5 FSI (BPY), inspect the cam follower first — a worn follower starves the pump and mimics HPFP failure.
The fix: replace the HPFP (and the follower on the FSI). Uprated internals exist for tuned cars that outrun the stock pump.
