The Mk2 16-valve (codes KR 1.8 and PL 1.8, later the 2.0 9A) is the enthusiast's Mk2 — a twin-cam head on the EA827 block, revvier and stronger than the 8v.
What to know:
- The 16v runs hydraulic lifters (no manual shims like the 8v), but the top end is oil-flow sensitive — keep the oil clean and correct or you get lifter tick and cam wear.
- Cam and lifter wear is the main high-mileage issue; listen for a persistent top-end tick.
- The exhaust manifold/downpipe cracks, and 30-year-old ignition and wiring age out.
Common faults: vacuum leaks (hunting idle), a tired idle stabiliser valve (ISV), and earth/wiring gremlins.
