The 8-valve engines (the EA827 in the Mk1/Mk2 GTI) use solid lifters, so the valve clearances need periodic manual adjustment — a real maintenance item, unlike the later hydraulic engines.
Why and when:
- Clearances change with wear; too tight and a valve won't seat (burnt valve), too loose and it's noisy. Check every ~30k miles or when it starts ticking.
How:
- Measure the gap cold with feeler gauges between cam and bucket.
- Adjust by swapping the shim under the bucket for the right thickness — a shim kit or a machine shop.
- The clearance spec is engine-specific — use the figures for your exact engine.
