The 24-valve VR6 — the Mk4-era R32/VR6 — has one infamous coolant weak point: a plastic coolant crossover pipe that runs underneath the intake manifold, goes brittle with heat and age, and then cracks. That's the legendary "crack pipe". It leaks coolant down in the valley of the engine where you can't see a thing, and to get at it you've got to take the intake manifold off.
