The Mk4 GTI (1999–2005) is the cheap way into a modern GTI — but a mixed bag, so buy on engine and history.
Engines:
| - 1.8T (AWP/AWD) — the tuner's choice, but oil sludge kills neglected ones — demand a clean service history and inspect the [[18t-coil-packs-sludge | pickup screen]]. Coil packs and the [[diverter-valve | DV]] are routine. |
|---|---|---|
| - 2.8 VR6 (12v/24v) — smooth and torquey; the [[vr6-timing-chains | timing chains]] are the big-ticket worry on the 24v. |
Check: coil packs/misfires, window regulators, wet footwells, tired interior trim, and front control arms.
