A clicking on tight turns or a vibration under acceleration on a GTI is a CV (constant-velocity) joint — the outer joint clicks, the inner vibrates.
Symptoms:
- Click-click-click on full lock (accelerating round a tight corner) = a worn outer CV joint.
- A vibration/shudder under hard acceleration = a worn inner CV or tripod.
- A split CV boot slinging grease — catch it early or the joint fails from lost grease and grit.
The fix:
- A split boot caught early: re-boot and re-grease. A worn joint: replace the joint or, often easier, the whole driveshaft (axle) — frequently cheaper than the labour.
- Torque the hub/axle nut to spec (high) with a new nut.
