On the manual GTIs, the clutch and dual-mass flywheel (DMF) wear together — and the DMF is the expensive half.
Symptoms:
- Clutch slip (revs rise without speed, worst in high gears under load) = worn clutch disc.
- A rattle at idle that stops when you press the clutch, or a shudder on take-up = a worn/failing DMF.
- A heavy or juddering pedal, or a leaking concentric slave cylinder.
The fix:
- Do the clutch and DMF together — the gearbox is out either way, and a new clutch on a tired DMF wastes the labour. Replace the release bearing and slave at the same time.
- Some owners fit a single-mass flywheel + sprung clutch for durability/tuning, at the cost of a little more noise.
