Wheel fitment on the GTI is a few numbers — get them right and anything fits; get them wrong and you rub or run spacers forever.
Modern (Mk5–Mk8):
- 5×112 bolt pattern, 57.1 mm centre bore, factory offset around ET45–ET51 on 17–19-inch wheels.
- Common OEM: 18×7.5 ET51, 18×8 ET45; aftermarket 18×8.5 / 19×8.5 with the right offset.
Older cars: Mk1–Mk3 are 4×100; the Mk4 is 5×100 — don't assume 5×112.
Getting it right:
- Lower offset (smaller ET) pushes the wheel out — too low and it rubs the arch.
- Wider tyre + lowered car is where rubbing starts — check clearance at full lock and compression.
- Keep the rolling diameter near stock so the speedo and gearing stay right.
