For handling, the GTI responds best to sorting the basics and the geometry before chasing spring rates.
The high-value order:
- Tyres — the biggest single grip gain, full stop.
- Fresh bushings and arms — worn control arms and beam bushes cost you more than any upgrade adds; renew them first.
- A proper alignment — dial in a little more front camber for turn-in on a keen car.
- Rear anti-roll bar — a stiffer rear bar cuts the GTI's natural understeer and adds rotation for little money. The best bang-for-buck handling mod.
- Coilovers — lower the CG and control roll; do it right and align (Coilovers Lowering).
Diff: a VAQ or a mechanical LSD transforms corner-exit traction on a powerful FWD GTI.
