Stage tuning is the GTI's party trick — the turbo engines respond hugely to a remap. What the stages actually mean:
Stage 1: an ECU flash only, on stock hardware. On an EA888 that's typically 50–80 hp/tq for the money — the best-value mod on the car. Reputable tunes (APR, Revo, Unitronic, Cobb, Integrated Engineering) are well-proven.
Stage 2: Stage 1 plus hardware — usually a downpipe (high-flow/decat) and often an intake, with a matching map. More power and spool, but a decat affects emissions/legality.
Stage 3 / big turbo: a larger turbo and supporting fuel and clutch — serious money and complexity, and into stock-internals territory at high power.
What I watch: a tune raises cylinder pressure, so a healthy clutch/DSG, coil packs, DV and cooling matter more (Clutch Upgrade Tuned, DSG Tune). Keep the oil changes short.
So Stage 1 is the standout value; I go further only with the supporting mods. See Bolt Ons Intake Exhaust.
For a Stage 1 you'll just want the flash from a reputable tuner; for Stage 2, add a downpipe and intercooler — I've put them below.
