Spark plugs on a turbo GTI are a quick job and cheap insurance against misfires — every ~40–60k miles, sooner if tuned.
Steps:
- Remove the engine cover. Unclip each coil connector and pull the coil straight up.
- Unscrew the plug with a spark-plug socket and extension.
- Fit the new plugs — correct heat range and gap (tuned cars run a colder plug, tighter gap). Torque to spec (~25–30 Nm) or by turn-angle.
- Refit coils and connectors.
Gotchas:
- Use the VW-spec plug and gap — wrong plugs cause misfires and kill coils.
- On a tuned car, drop a heat range and gap tighter (~0.7 mm) to stop spark blow-out under boost.
