The Mk3 GTI (1992–1998) is the heavier, softer chapter — bigger and safer than the Mk2 but less loved by purists, which makes it a value buy.
Engines:
- 2.0 8-valve (ABA) — torquey but not exciting.
- 2.8 VR6 — the highlight: the narrow-angle six that gave the Mk3 real pace and a wonderful noise (VR6 Timing Chains).
What defines it: the arrival of the VR6, more weight and refinement, and the GTI's move upmarket.
Owning one: rust, the VR6's timing chains and cooling, and 90s VW electrics. The VR6 is the one to have.
