The Mk4 GTI (1999–2005) is the plush, well-built but softer GTI — a big step in interior quality, a step back in edge, and now the cheap way into a modern GTI.
Engines:
- 1.8T (AWP/AWD) — the tuner's favourite with huge aftermarket, but sludge-sensitive (18t Coil Packs Sludge).
- 2.8 VR6 (12v/24v) — smooth; the 24v's chains are the worry (VR6 Timing Chains).
- The 337 / 20th Anniversary / R32 specials sharpened it up.
What defines it: quality and comfort over sharpness — and the 1.8T tuning scene.
